The American paradox: Controversal motives between the practice of slavery and the claiming of independence
Author(s): Didier Kombieni
Abstract: Slavery has been part and parcel of the contemporary history in general, and that of America in particular. Even though the practice of slavery cannot be accounted for, the odious working of blacks on the American plantations has been taken for normal for a long time. The American experience in fighting for independence, based on the assumption that all men are created equal, has finally drawn white Americans’ attention on the inconsistency between their claim for independence and their practicing slavery; yet, this consciousness has not immediately been sufficient to change their mentality.
