Abstract
Ageing though is a biological phenomenon;rn‘Ageing’ is also a social construct. Alteration in socio-economic status andrnvarious health problems harmfully affect an individual’s way of life throughoutrnold age. The main objective of the present paper is to study the health andrnsocial harms of the elderly and their approach towards life. Present study isrnbased on primary data and the simple random sampling method has been adoptedrnfor selecting sample of the study; more than half of the respondents were uneducated.rnHalf of the respondents felt they were not pleased in life. A majority ofrnrespondents are illiterates and had health problems such as hypertensionsrnfollowed by arthritis, diabetes, asthma and anemia. The respondents sufferingrnfrom various diseases said that the attitudes of people towards the elderlyrnwere that of neglect. The result of the study showed that there is a need forrnelderly counseling centers that can take care of their physical andrnpsychosomatic needs. The strict rules for eligibility to social safety schemesrnshould be made more flexible to cover a larger population.
