Politiques aquacoles, tradition agricole et developpement de la pisciculture dans le departement de Korhogo (Cote D’ivoire)

The fish farming development programs initiated in Côte d'Ivoire after independence have not yielded the expected results. At the national level, huge disparities exist between the south, which has the highest production volumes and the weakest north. The answer to this situation lies in several areas including cultural factors. It is on this point that is positioned this text whose object is the development of aquaculture in Côte d'Ivoire. Its main objective is to show how the agricultural tradition of the populations in the department of Korhogo, thwarts the development of the fish farming in spite of the aquaculture policies carried out by the Ivorian State since 1960 in the zone. The study is based on desk research and a field survey of aquaculture production sites and services related to aquaculture. The analysis of aquaculture development policies attests to the plurality of actions in the direction of promoting activity in northern Côte d'Ivoire, particularly in the Korhogo department. However, in the face of the lack of aquaculture tradition of the indigenous populations, these actions did not give the expected results. The analysis of the agricultural landscape of the department, presents an activity in pain, translated by the occupation of the spaces favorable to the fish farming by other agricultural activities in particular the rice farming, many abandonments of farms and few functional ponds and the fall local production of farmed fish.
