The objectives of Shari’ah in reforming the institution of marriage

This paper is an attempt to explore or reveal the contributing of the objectives of Shari’ah in the reformation of the institution of marriage as a legal unification of man and women. It also draws the attention of all Islamic Ummah on the tenets of marriage during pre- Islamic and the Islamic era. The origin of marriage as an ancient institution is highlighted and the aims based on the Qur’an, Sunnah and work of some Islamic scholars, purposes of marriage in Islam and pillars governing the validity of marriage in Islam. The paper in ex-raying the objective of marriage in Islam observed that there are four objectives of Islamic in family marriage, which are preservation of racial lineage (Nasab) i.e. retention of a family prevention of Islamic Ummah from fornication or adultery and protection of a woman’s dignity. The paper finally concludes with the general objective of Shari’ah as regards marriage that there are several guiding principles and wisdom in the Qur’an and Hadithin order to sustain peace and harmony among the Muslim Ummah.
