Abstract
The rise of social media platforms has
fundamentally altered human interactions, social behaviors, and patterns of
communication. This paper examines the influence of social media on
interpersonal relationships, socialization processes, and the formation of
social norms. Drawing on recent sociological research, the paper explores both
positive and negative consequences of social media usage, including enhanced
connectivity, social capital, and community formation, alongside issues of
social isolation, reduced empathy, and online disinhibition. The study
highlights the need for sociological frameworks to understand digital
interaction patterns and proposes directions for future research to mitigate
adverse effects while promoting healthy online engagement. The findings suggest
that while social media has the potential to strengthen social ties, careful
attention to usage patterns and digital literacy is essential to prevent
detrimental social and psychological effects.
