Abstract
Cholera became a
challenge for the colonial state in India to control. The causes of the disease
was being investigated by medical professionals. The government was keen to
contain the disease as it affected the army as well as the civilians. However,
the efforts were not sufficient as is evident from the rapid spread and high
mortality rate of the disease. This article attempts to survey the instances
and causes of cholera epidemics in western and central divisions of the United
Provinces of Agra and Oudh during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
through the study of various district gazetteers of the province.
