Abstract
Family and marriage have historically been
central institutions in Indian society, deeply rooted in cultural traditions,
kinship structures, and social expectations. However, the emergence of
Generation Z (born approximately between 1997 and 2012) has introduced
significant changes in attitudes toward marriage, family systems, gender roles,
and partner selection. Influenced by globalization, digital media, education,
economic independence, and changing gender dynamics, Generation Z is redefining
conventional norms of family and marriage in India. This research paper
examines the transformation of marriage and family norms among Generation Z in
India, focusing on trends such as delayed marriages, increasing preference for
love marriages, acceptance of inter-caste and inter-religious unions, rise of
nuclear families, growing acceptance of live-in relationships, and shifting
gender roles. The study employs secondary data analysis and sociological
interpretation to understand these evolving patterns. The paper concludes that
while Generation Z is challenging traditional norms, family and marriage
continue to remain socially relevant, albeit in transformed forms.
