Rural
community development remains a fundamental component of national progress,
particularly in countries where a significant proportion of the population
resides in villages. In India, rural communities continue to play a central
role in agriculture, traditional occupations, and cultural preservation.
However, despite decades of development planning and the implementation of
various welfare schemes, many rural areas continue to face persistent
challenges such as poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, gender inequality,
inadequate healthcare facilities, and social exclusion. These issues are often
interconnected and deeply rooted in structural and socio-cultural factors. Sustainable
rural development requires more than economic investment or infrastructure
expansion. It demands active participation of community members, awareness
about rights and entitlements, collective action, and professional guidance. In
this context, social workers play a crucial role in facilitating community
empowerment and promoting inclusive development. They act as mediators between
government systems and rural populations, mobilize communities for collective
action, assist in accessing welfare schemes, and promote social justice.
