Political participation and the changing nature of public opinion in India

Abstract
Public opinion and political engagement are crucial elements of democratic politics. Voting, party membership, election campaigns, public gatherings, social movements, and civil society activities have all historically been used in India to demonstrate political engagement. However, the ways in which citizens engage in political life have broadened due to changes in the economy, society, technology, and media. New venues for political discourse, opinion formation, mobilization, and citizen engagement have been made possible by the expansion of television, the internet, and social media. Interactions between traditional media, digital platforms, political parties, civil society organizations, and interpersonal networks are increasingly influencing public opinion. However, societal factors like caste, class, gender, religion, geography, education, and economic circumstances continue to have an impact on political engagement. In addition to giving underrepresented groups—such as women and young people—the chance to voice their opinions and take part in public discussions, digital platforms have raised issues with disinformation, polarization, online abuse, and unequal access to the internet. This essay explores how public opinion and political involvement are evolving in India and makes the case that traditional means of participation and newly developed digital modes of political engagement interact in modern democracies.
