Abstract
This paper presents Śrī Rāma as an embodiment
of Dharma in the epic Ramayana, written by Sage Vālmīki. Rāma, who followed
four great endeavours, namely, the Dharma, Prosperity, Enjoyment and
Emancipation, which led him to get the legendary title of Maryādā Puruṣottam.
Gosvāmī Tulasiīdās also described the same qualities of Rāma in
Rāma-Carita-Mānasa. The genesis of the Ramayana was the result of a
conversation between Vālmīki and Nārada. This paper describes some of the
Rāma’s supreme qualities, such as respect for parents, sacrifice for
righteousness, valour, gratitude and love for brothers and people. Owing to
such qualities, Rāma is personified as a great person. He is referred to as
‘Maryādā Purușottama’ because he functioned within the wise domain as determined
by the classical Vedic literature.
