Abstract
India is a developing country that has
experienced rapid economic and social growth in recent years. Much of this
progress is driven by the development of individual states that have increased
their Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) and gained recognition at the
international level. The SHGs have emerged as an effective mechanism for
promoting economic growth, reducing poverty, and empowering marginalized
communities. Karnataka’s economy is largely agrarian and rural in nature,
providing employment to a major portion of the population while supporting
industries, trade, transport, and commerce. The SHG movement in India
originated in rural Karnataka during the early 1980s and later expanded across
the country as a successful model of community-driven development and financial
inclusion. The functioning of SHGs is based on the principle of “Savings first,
credit later.” The SHGs act as a bridge between rural and urban economies by
encouraging small-scale production, micro-enterprises, savings, and financial
activities that generate income and improve livelihoods. Consequently, SHGs
have become a powerful instrument for rural transformation, women’s
empowerment, and sustainable economic development in Karnataka and across
India. In this context, the study is tried to tackle out the SHGs growth trend
in the Karnataka and also study the progress of SHGs in Bengaluru South
District.
