Abstract
Indian English literature has witnessed remarkable contributions from
women writers who highlighted social realities, gender discrimination, cultural
transformation, and moral values through their literary works. Among them,
Sudha Murty occupies a significant position as a novelist, philanthropist,
educator, and social reformer. Her novels portray the struggles of women in
patriarchal society and emphasize themes such as self-respect, education,
sacrifice, morality, social justice, and women empowerment. Through simple
language and realistic characterization, Sudha Murty presents the condition of
middle-class Indian society and inspires readers toward ethical living and
humanity. This research paper examines major themes in the novels of Sudha
Murty with special reference to women empowerment, social discrimination,
family relationships, and Indian cultural values. The study adopts an
analytical and descriptive approach based on selected novels including Mahashweta,
Dollar Bahu, Gently Falls the Bakula, and House of Cards.
